Alpine residents honored for saving jogger
Paramedics stabilized Bristol, superintendent of the Lakeside Union School District, and took him to a hospital. “In less than two weeks he emerged from that hospital, full of life,” Division Chief Brad Rushing of the Alpine Fire Protection District said May 15. Rushing spoke at a ceremony honoring Peel, Kuhn, Eaddy and others who helped with the rescue. Bristol, Peel and Kuhn shared hugs during the emotional event that the fire district and San Diego Project Heartbeat held at district headquarters at 1364 Tavern Road. Alpine students compete in state history finals
RIVERSIDE ---- Six Joan MacQueen Middle School students were among San Diego County representatives April 27-28 at the state finals of National History Day-California in Riverside. Alpine students Jack Schaefer, Josh Hank, Marco Barron, Thomas Cooney, Dominic Garza and Cole Tart made it through heavy county competition on March 17 in order to be among 952 statewide contenders. Although the Alpine team didn’t win at the Riverside Convention Center, they were excellent representatives who worked hard, according to Joan MacQueen teacher Susan K. Lancaster. “These young minds simply amaze me with their knowledge and their talents,” Lancaster said. The Alpine students worked for six months researching, interviewing, composing and creating exhibits, research papers and documentaries. They studied the Supreme Court decision that led to the Civil Rights movement; reformation of industry when child labor was addressed; the revolutionary ship design leading to exploration of the Americas and the effects after the USA and the USSR each got half of Germany’s scientists after World War II. At the county level the Alpine team won in Individual Documentary, Group Documentary and Group Exhibit, Lancaster said. “All were outstanding,” she said. After the state competition, the only San Diego County students to go on to the national level were from Francis Parker and Oak Grove Middle School, Lancaster said.
“We wish these students success this summer,” said the Alpine teacher.
Lancaster said she and teachers Robbie Skovmand and Penny Garza now have more information to help next year’s students be even more successful.
The Kiwanis Club of Alpine and the Alpine Education Foundation are raising funds to help cover this year’s competition costs.
Community donations to help can be made to Friends of Joan MacQueen or Alpine Educational Foundation, c/o 2001 Tavern Road, Alpine CA 91901.
